Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week’s Tuesday Topic: What are some of the best things you’ve seen at a race or a run?
? You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
If you have been running for any length of time, you’re sure to come across some cool/bizarre things while doing a normal run or running in a race. My runs tend to be very boring/uneventful (which I guess is a good thing?), but I have come across some cool things on my runs.
T-Rex – 2017 Chicago Marathon
I was super nervous before starting this race so it was quite a delight to look over to my left and see a guy in a T-Rex costume. To this day, I’m not sure if he finished the marathon, but it sure did provide me with a ton of laughs as we started the race!
Watching the Elite runners at the NYC Marathon
I’ve volunteered at the NYC Marathon twice and both times I’ve been lucky enough to see the Elite runners fly on the course. I always volunteer near Mile 18 and it’s so cool to have a front row seat as the runners go by. The one thing I remember is that they always look super strong and in control, whereas I’m usually a hot mess around mile 18, LOL.
A Family of Deer
I don’t run on the trails so the one time I saw a family of deer on a long run really took me by surprise. I have to assume that they got a little lost on their way “back home”, but I think they may have been more scared of me than I was of them! They remained completely still as I ran by.
Tell me: What are some of the best things you’ve seen at a race or a run?

Topic for next week – Is there a popular race you never want to run? Feel free to write about this or any running related topic. We hope you’ll link up with us!

Due to Covid, the Market to-Market relay didn’t happen last year (and it’s not happening this year, either), but there are a lot of clever teams who participate. They paint their vehicles and many have costumes. The first year, there was a team of guys (all quite hot, BTW). ALL were dressed in orange jail/convict suits, but one of them was in short shorts (the “cop”). ALL had a chain they were holding LOL At every exchange point, they’d show up…then the new runner would strip off his suit (with his running gear underneath) and would take off-off when the in-coming runner arrived. I think they called themselves the Chain Gangers. They were hilarious!

The Market-to-Market relay sounds really interesting! Hopefully the race will be back next year.

If the T-Rex finished the race in that costume he is an absolute hero!! How amazing to have seen the elites in action! And still looking so fresh at Mile 18, LOL! The strangest thing I’ve ever seen was runner running with two corn cobs, one in each hand. I spent my whole run trying to figure out why!
kookyrunner says
The fact that they look so good at Mile 18 always baffles me – like how?! especially running at those speeds!
Running with corn cobs is definitely interesting…lol.

I was so surprised last week to see an entire herd of deer running across the road! We do see deer now & again, but I’d never seen them there, and I don’t usually see so many at a time. The last time I saw something like that was actually right before my Dad passed. Weird!
The run through weddings at the Vegas Half were really cool. Even came to find out years later that an acquaintance was actually one of those brides!
On the creepy side, I once saw a machete on the side of the road while running near my MIL. My SIL said they often leave them there to help cut back the bushes, but I didn’t know that at the time!

Seeing a herd of deer would have surprised me as well!
I forgot about the run through weddings in Vegas. I saw that at RnR Las Vegas but didn’t snap a photo since my phone battery was low.

The look of that woman next to the T-Rex! Haha!
That’s a great reason to volunteer at a marathon – you get to see the elite up close.
I think the coolest thing I ever saw and heard was a group of three Alphorns at the Jungfrau Marathon. The setting was incredible with all the mountains in the background. It was close to the finish line and we had climbed thousands of feet. It was a lovely sight!
kookyrunner says
That’s one great perks of volunteering for the NYC Marathon – always great to see the Elites fly by at speeds I can only dream of, lol.
Darlene S Cardillo says
I have seen some crazy costumes. I don’t know how they run in them.
Around here, deer are a common occurrence.
I did watch the nYC marathon one year and it was way cool to see those elites fly by.

Running in a turkey costume was a little hard for me and that was a short distance so I have no clue how people can run a marathon in a costume.
Jessie says
I can’t imagine running a marathon in that costume! My friend was determined to set the world record as a hot dog, but then a woman ran like a 3:15 as a hot dog so that goal was too far away.
Watching the elites is always so inspiring, especially up close! What a fun opportunity to volunteer there.
kookyrunner says
Running any race in a hot dog costume sounds like a lot of fun!
San says
OMG, people who run in any costumes are a different breed… but the T-Rex is the cherry on top! 🙂
kookyrunner says
Right?! I have no clue how he could breathe with the head part on.
Deborah Brooks says
Your T Rex reminded me of the time that a guy in a full Turkey suit with the webbed feet blew by me in a turkey trot!! Maybe I should run in a Turkey suit! LOL
kookyrunner says
Running with the webbed feet for the turkey costume takes dedication!
Jenn says
I don’t care where I am, t-rex makes me happy.
I love costumes at races and I love seeing animals while l am running.
kookyrunner says
Same here! That costume just always makes me laugh, lol.
Coco says
That dinosaur runner is amazing. There’s a guy I’ve seen juggling through the D.C. 10 milers I do. I can’t imagine!
kookyrunner says
Oh I think I’ve seent he guy that juggles too!
Michelle D. says
Now I’m wondering if the guy in the dino costume finished LOL! I cannot fathom running a marathon in a costume!
kookyrunner says
Running a 5K in a costume is hard so I have no clue how someone can do it for 26.2 miles!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I cannot imagine running a marathon in a costume like that! Seeing the elite runners is pretty awesome! I’ve seen them while spectating the Chicago Marathon and last year in Atlanta.
kookyrunner says
It’s always such a treat to see the Elite runners!
